USDA extends application deadline for Nov 6-8 trade mission to Mexico.

It is expected to get chance a great opportunity to make new contacts and grow business. The new application deadline is Friday, August 23, 2019.

Mexico has long been a top market for U.S. farm and food products – and the new U.S.-Mexico-Canada Agreement promises to unlock even greater opportunities for American exporters.

U. S. companis can come along and explore those opportunities when the U.S. Department of Agriculture leads a trade mission to Mexico City November 6-8, 2019.

Currently, United States’ southern neighbor is the #1 export market for U.S. corn, dairy, poultry and eggs, sugar and sweeteners, distillers dried grains, and rice.  It also ranks among the top destinations for an assortment of processed foods and beverages, as well as other key products including soybeans, beef, pork, wheat, and fresh fruits and vegetables.

USDA recommends to do not miss this chance to grow the U.S. company export business by connecting with potential customers and learning the ins and outs of doing business with Mexico.

Canada Revises Beer Standards to Promote Innovation

According to the USDA Canada revised prescriptive beer compositional standards to better reflect and support a diversifying beer industry, while providing beer drinkers greater information about allergenic content. The revisions implemented changes proposed in a 2018 consultation. Brewers will have until December 2022 to comply with new regulatory and labeling changes.

On May 1, the Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) issued a news release and notice to industry announcing new compositional standards for beer. Domestic and imported products will need to comply with new regulatory requirements and labeling changes by December 14, 2022.

The new beer compositional standards include the following changes:

 standards for ale, stout, porter and malt liquor are replaced by one standard for all beer styles and types;

 food allergens, gluten sources or added sulphites are required to be declared on the label;

 residual sugar is limited to four percent in the final product to distinguish standardized beer from sweeter malt-based beverages;

 flavoring preparations are allowed to be used along with mandatory labelling (for example, “beer with blueberry flavor”);

 references to specific food additives are replaced with a general reference to additives permitted in beer under Health Canada’s Lists of Permitted Food Additives;

 processing aids no longer have to be listed;  the use of herbs and spices is now allowed;

 the use of mixtures of yeast and other micro-organisms for fermentation is allowed.

Beer sales in Canada reached $9.2 billion CAD in 2018, with volume topping 2.2 billion liters. Of the total volume of beer sold in Canada in 2018, about 25 percent was imported – nearly 560 million liters.

The United States was the second largest supplier of imported beer, shipping approximately 110 million liters for a 20 percent share of total imports. The number one supplier of imported beer in 2018 was the Netherlands (Heineken) with 21 percent of the import market. Mexico was the number three supplier with a 17 percent market share.

NYC & Company, the official destination marketing organization and convention and visitors bureau for New York City, is facilitating rainbow lightings across all five boroughs—a first for the organization—in celebration of the queer community and the first WorldPride in the United States. Throughout the month of June, approximately 4 million visitors in addition to locals will witness an awe-inspiring expression of LGBTQ+ representation and acceptance across the Bronx, Brooklyn, Manhattan, Queens and Staten Island, aligned to the monumental celebration and the Stonewall Uprising’s 50th anniversary.

“New York City is the birthplace of the modern LGBTQ rights movement and has played a significant role in the progress the global movement has made. This month our City will host WorldPride to commemorate the 50th Anniversary of the Stonewall uprising.  Lighting our skyline will remind LGBTQ people around the world that New York City will always be a beacon of hope and a place to call home,” said Mayor Bill de Blasio.

“Hosting the first-ever US WorldPride during the 50th anniversary of Stonewall will be a profound and historic moment for the LGBTQ+ community in New York City and around the world,” said Fred Dixon, NYC & Company’s president and CEO. “We are so grateful to all of our lighting partners for commemorating this significant milestone and helping us welcome as many as 4 million travelers who will experience our city’s diversity, inclusivity and vibrant spirit.”

The five-borough lighting is part of NYC & Company’s larger destination marketing initiative Project Rainbow. This unique effort empowers member businesses to unify their branding in celebration of WorldPride and in solidarity with all that it represents. Attractions, bus tour operators, cultural organizations, entertainment entities, hotels, restaurants, transportation providers and more received creative assets to include on consumer-facing materials and recommendations on how to show support during WorldPride.

Under Secretary McKinney to Lead U.S. Exporters on Trade Mission to Colombia

Colombia and Panama are among the fastest-growing markets in the Western Hemisphere for U.S. farm and food products. American exporters seeking to tap that potential will join Under Secretary for Trade and Foreign Agricultural Affairs Ted McKinney in Bogotá for the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s largest-ever international trade mission June 4-7.

“The record size of this trade mission delegation demonstrates the degree of U.S. exporter interest in these markets,” McKinney said. “I’m thrilled that representatives from 54 agribusiness and associations and six state departments of agriculture are on board and ready to connect with potential customers from both Colombia and Panama.”

The United States entered into free trade agreements with both countries in 2012 and, since then, agricultural export growth has been robust.

“Our food and farm exports to Colombia have nearly tripled, from $1.1 billion in 2012 to a record $2.9 billion in 2018. And while Panama’s a much smaller market, we’ve also seen our exports grow significantly, from $490 million in 2012 to $683 million last year,” McKinney said.

In addition to representatives from the following companies and organizations, McKinney will be joined by Minnesota Commissioner of Agriculture Thom Petersen, Virginia Secretary of Agriculture and Forestry Bettina Ring, and officials from the Georgia, Idaho, Missouri and Montana departments of agriculture.

Under Secretary McKinney will hold a teleconference from Bogotá with U.S. media on Wednesday, June 5 at 3:30 p.m., EDT.

ISC East, sponsored by the Security Industry Association (SIA), the Northeast’s premier security industry convention for new products, solutions and technologies, last August announced its co-locating with Infosecurity North America and Unmanned Security Expo (USE). This move provides security professionals with even more opportunities to yield the benefits of robust educational sessions, listen to high-level speakers, explore new products and services, network with fellow security industry members and more. ISC East, Infosecurity North America and Unmanned Security Expo will take place November 14-15, 2018 at the Javits Center in New York City.

“New York is considered home to some of the most influential technology brands in the world. And given the city’s burgeoning cybersecurity space, bringing Infosecurity North America and Unmanned Security Expo here is a natural fit, as well as an excellent way to facilitate face time with the best and brightest the city has to offer,”said John Hyde, Exhibition Director, Infosecurity North America. “We’re on track to drive over 4,000 security professionals to the show this year – many of who are executive-level decision makers. Co-locating with these two additional leading security shows opens the door of opportunity, helping attendees meet new companies and professionals who all have one common goal: bringing home tangible tactics to fight complex, evolving cyber threats.”

The second year since its inception at ISC West in April 2017, USE provides an area solely dedicated to Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs), Unmanned Ground Robotics & Vehicles (UGVs), counter-drone solutions and the software and applications that support them. Attendees will have access to hands-on demos of the latest innovations in drone technologies, conversations with industry experts about changing FAA regulations, and more.

“With Infosecurity North America and Unmanned Security Expo co-locating with ISC East, attendees will have access to an abundance of resources and educational opportunities, arming them with the tools and skills needed to defend against today’s emerging cyber-physical security threats,” said Will Wise, Group Vice President of the ISC Security Portfolio at Reed Exhibitions. “We’re looking forward to having these powerhouse conferences under the same roof for the first time and bringing the brightest minds in security together to knowledge-share.”

Listed on Trade Show Executive’s Fastest 50 Lists, ISC East was named one of the “Fastest 50” growing shows in the country by Net Square Feet of Exhibit Space and is continuing to expand. Through its partnership with Infosecurity North America and USE, ISC East will attract more attendees than ever before, providing them with access to new companies, associations and industry peers, all in the same convention center.

ISC East is the Northeast United States’ security industry’s premier convention for new products, solutions and technologies. Each year, ISC East hosts international and domestic security product manufacturer companies and security professionals at New York’s Javits Center. IMF Releases World Economic Outlook, October 2018

IMF released world economic outlook, October 2018 yesterday. The steady expansion under way since mid-2016 continues, with global growth for 2018–19 projected to remain at its 2017 level. At the same time, however, the expansion has become less balanced and may have peaked in some major economies. Downside risks to global growth have risen in the past six months and the potential for upside surprises has receded.

“The latest World Economic Outlook report projects that global growth will remain steady over this year and next, at last year’s rate of 3.7 percent”, Maurice Obstfeld, Economic Counsellor and Director of the Research Department of IMF said.

Global growth for 2018–19 is projected to remain steady at its 2017 level, but its pace is less vigorous than projected in April and it has become less balanced. Downside risks to global growth have risen in the past six months and the potential for upside surprises has receded. Global growth is projected at 3.7 percent for 2018–19—0.2 percentage point lower for both years than forecast in April.

The downward revision reflects surprises that suppressed activity in early 2018 in some major advanced economies, the negative effects of the trade measures implemented or approved between April and mid-September, as well as a weaker outlook for some key emerging market and developing economies arising from country-specific factors, tighter financial conditions, geopolitical tensions, and higher oil import bills.

Output losses after the 2008 financial crisis appear to be persistent, irrespective of whether a country suffered a banking crisis in 2007–08. Sluggish investment was a key channel through which these losses registered, accompanied by long-lasting capital and total factor productivity shortfalls relative to precrisis trends.

Policy choices preceding the crisis and in its immediate aftermath influenced postcrisis variation in output. Underscoring the importance of macroprudential policies and effective supervision, countries with greater financial vulnerabilities in the precrisis years suffered larger output losses after the crisis. Countries with stronger precrisis fiscal positions and those with more flexible exchange rate regimes experienced smaller losses. Unprecedented and exceptional policy actions taken after the crisis helped mitigate countries’ postcrisis output losses.

Inflation in emerging market and developing economies since the mid-2000s has, on average, been low and stable. IMF investigated whether these recent gains in inflation performance are sustainable as global financial conditions normalize.

First, despite the overall stability, sizable heterogeneity in inflation performance and in variability of longer-term inflation expectations remains among emerging markets.

Second, changes in longer-term inflation expectations are the main determinant of inflation, while external conditions play a more limited role, suggesting that domestic, not global, factors are the main contributor to the recent gains in inflation performance.

Third, further improvements in the extent of anchoring of inflation expectations can significantly improve economic resilience to adverse external shocks in emerging markets. Anchoring reduces inflation persistence and limits the pass-through of currency depreciations to domestic prices, allowing monetary policy to focus more on smoothing fluctuations in output.

Boon Edam Launches Online, Interactive Troubleshooting Guides for Security Entrances

Lillington, North Carolina, 26 July 2018 – Boon Edam Inc., a global leader in security entrances and architectural revolving doors, is proud to announce the launch of new interactive troubleshooting guides for accelerating the diagnosis and problem-solving process for service technicians in the Americas. As part of the company’s commitment to providing the best support for its service partners, any registered technician with internet access, working on a Boon Edam security entrance can now view and interact with the troubleshooting guides.

“We’re excited to be adding to the self-service “tool bag” we’ve been putting together for the service technician,” says Kevin Thomasson, VP of Customer Experience, Boon Edam. “Technicians have a number of items in their arsenal already – phone support, a chat function on the website, new instructional videos, and even a traveling training program they can attend. These new troubleshooting guides are the latest addition, and give the technician just one more avenue to find answers to their service questions.”

The troubleshooting guides are currently available in English on three of Boon Edam’s most popular security products: the Circlelock mantrap portal, theTourlock security revolving door and the Speedlane Lifeline optical turnstile seriesTo obtain access to the troubleshooting guides, technicians should visit and fill out the form.

Samsung Research, the advanced R&D hub of Samsung Electronics’ business, has ranked first in two of the world’s top global artificial intelligence (AI) machine reading comprehension competitions.

Samsung Research recently placed first in the MS MARCO (Microsoft MAchine Reading Comprehension) competition, as well as showing the best performance in the University of Washington’s ongoing competition for TriviaQA, a challenge dataset for AI reading comprehension. Competitions such as MS MARCO and TriviaQA are ongoing competitions and allow contestants to participate at any time, rankings are altered according to real-time test results.

With intense competition in developing AI technologies globally, machine reading comprehension competitions such as MS MARCO are booming around the world. MS MARCO and TriviaQA are among the actively researched and used machine reading comprehension competitions along with SQuAD (Stanford Question Answering Dataset) of Stanford University and NarrativeQA developed by the University of Oxford and Google’s DeepMind. Distinguished universities around the world and global AI firms, including Samsung, are competing in these challenges.

Machine reading comprehension is where an AI algorithm is tasked with analyzing data and finding an optimum answer to a query on its own accord. For MS MARCO and TriviaQA, AI algorithms are tested on their capabilities of processing natural language from real anonymized user queries and also providing written text in various types of documents such as news articles and blog posts.

For example in MS MARCO, ten web documents are presented for a certain query to let an AI algorithm create an optimum answer. Queries are randomly selected from a million queries from Bing (MS search engine) users. Answers are evaluated statistically by estimating how close they are to human answers.

Samsung Research took part in the competitions with ConZNet, an AI algorithm developed by the company’s AI Center. ConZNet features skillful capabilities through adopting the Reinforcement Learning technique, which advances machine intelligence by giving reasonable feedback for outcomes, similar to a carrot-and-stick strategy to reinforce learning outcomes. The Reinforcement Learning technique is the most advanced type of Machine Learning AI algorithm, and cutting-edge AI technologies, including AlphaGo, are upgrading machine intelligence by applying this technique.

With the recent acceleration in global competition to develop AI technologies, contests are widespread in the areas of computer vision (technologies to analyze characters and images) and visual Q&A to solve problems using recognized images of characters as well as machine reading comprehension.

The Beijing branch of Samsung Research won the International Conference on Document Analysis and Recognition (ICDAR) hosted by the International Association of Pattern Recognition (IAPR) in March, putting them in a top-tier group for global computer vision tests. The ICDAR is the most influential competition in Optical Character Recognition (OCR) technologies.

“We are developing an AI algorithm to provide answers to user queries in a simpler and more convenient manner, for real life purposes,” said Jihie Kim, Head of Language Understanding Lab at Samsung Research. “Active discussion is underway in Samsung to adopt the ConZNet AI algorithm for products, services, customer response and technological development.”
